This year I set myself a challenge: to paint every stage of the Tour of Britain, both the Women’s Tour in June and the Men’s Tour in September. Now that the final finish line has been crossed, I’m delighted to share that the project is complete – a visual diary of two races that together tell the story of cycling across Britain. I have been following the tour in paintings for 10 years
Capturing the Movement of Cycling
Cycling is fleeting – the peloton flashes by in a blur of colour, the drama of breakaways and sprints unfolding in seconds. My task was to hold on to those moments, to turn them into brushstrokes that capture the speed, atmosphere, and emotion of the races.
Each stage brought something different to the canvas:
-
City starts and finishes buzzing with noise and colour.
-
Rolling countryside roads weaving through hedgerows, fields, and dramatic skies.
-
Steep climbs etched with grit, determination, and fatigue.
-
Explosive sprints full of energy and motion.
Every painting is a memory – not just of the riders, but of the places and people who lined the roads to cheer them on.
Two Tours, Two Stories
The Women’s Tour in June unfolded in the warmth of summer, with bright light and pouring rain giving a different energy infusing the stages. The Men’s Tour in September carried a different mood – dramatic weather, autumn landscapes, and the thrill of the season’s final battles and the constant presences of the G on his retirement race
Together, these races reveal the full spirit of cycling in Britain. By painting both, I wanted to show the equal dedication, resilience, and artistry of all the athletes who make the Tours so special.
A Completed Journey
From the first flag drop in June to the final sprint in September, I created a painting for every stage of both Tours. Some are fast, expressive studies, painted to mirror the urgency of racing. Others are more considered pieces, where I lingered on a decisive moment: a cresting climb, a soaked crowd, a streak of colour against brooding skies.
The result is a complete collection that tells the story of Britain in motion – a celebration of its landscapes, communities, and the sport of cycling.
